Free ATS Resume Checker

Paste your resume and a job description. Get an ATS match score out of 100, the skills and key terms you are missing, and the formatting fixes that matter. It is free, needs no account, and nothing you paste is stored.

An ATS (applicant tracking system) is the software many employers use to collect and sort job applications. It reads your resume as plain text, so the words and layout you use decide how well it matches a job. This checker scores that match with fixed rules, then lists exactly what to fix. Employers use different systems, so treat the score as a guide to your wording, not a promise of an interview.

Check your resume

Paste the text of your resume, paste the job description, and add the job title if you like. The job description should include the requirements, because the score is built from the skills and terms it names.

Checked on our servers with fixed rules, no AI. Nothing you paste is stored.

What the score checks

The score is out of 100. It adds up five checks, each worth a fixed number of points. The same resume and job always give the same score.

  • Skills the job names (40 points). The tools and skills named in the job description, such as SQL, Excel, Figma or project management, are looked up in your resume. A skill the job lists as required counts double a nice-to-have one.
  • Key terms from the job (25 points). Up to 15 phrases the job repeats or states as a requirement, such as "stakeholder reporting". They count as found when your resume uses them, with or without word endings, so "manage" matches "managed".
  • Job title (10 points). The words in the job title, leaving out level words like Senior or Junior, are looked up in your resume. If no job title can be found, this check does not change your score.
  • Standard sections (10 points). Your resume should show an Experience or Projects section, an Education section, a Skills section, and contact details with an email address and a phone number.
  • ATS-friendly formatting (15 points). Layout problems take points off. The checker looks for too little or too much text, missing dates, missing standard headings, a two-column or table layout, icons and decorative symbols, very long bullets, experience written as paragraphs, and "I" or "my" used again and again.

The score maps to a band: 80 or more is a strong match, 65 to 79 is good, 45 to 64 is fair, and below 45 is weak.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ATS score?

An ATS score estimates how closely your resume matches a job description, the way applicant tracking software reads it. A higher score means your resume uses more of the job's skills and wording and is laid out so software can read it. Employers use different systems and no score guarantees an interview, so use it to find gaps in your wording.

How is this score calculated?

With fixed rules, not AI. The score adds up five checks: skills the job names (40 points), key terms from the job (25), job title (10), standard sections (10) and ATS-friendly formatting (15). The same resume and job description always give the same score, and the result shows how many points each check earned and why.

Is my resume stored?

No. Your resume and job description are checked in memory on our servers and the result is sent straight back to you. We do not store the text you paste, and we do not send it to any AI provider.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it is free and you do not need an account or to sign in. Resume Maker, which tailors your resume to a job with AI and drafts cover letters, is a separate paid add-on for members.

Can I upload a PDF or Word file?

Not on this page. Paste the text of your resume here. Members can check an uploaded resume from inside their account, in Prepare, under ATS score.

How do I raise my score?

Start with the missing required skills and add each one only if you really have it, in your Skills section and in the bullet where you used it. Use the job's own key terms where they describe what you did. Then fix the formatting issues listed in the result. Resume Maker can tailor your summary and bullets to the job for you.

Why does a skill I have show as missing?

The checker looks for each skill by name, including common spellings. If you have done the work but described it in different words, your resume does not show the skill the way the job names it. If it is true for you, use the job's wording.

Does it work for jobs outside tech?

It knows common tools and skills across technology, data, finance, marketing, design, HR and operations. If a job description names no specific tools or skills, the result says so, and the score then rests on key terms, sections and formatting.
