50 HR Interview Questions and Answers for Freshers (2026)
50 HR interview questions and answers for freshers, grouped: about you, motivation, situational, company and role, salary, relocation, bond and notice period.
The HR round is the last gate in most Indian fresher hiring, and it is where candidates who cleared the technical round still get rejected for vague answers, an unclear reason for joining, or a wrong reply about relocation or the service agreement. This bank has 50 questions grouped the way HR rounds actually run, each with a concise answer you can adapt. Longer answers for the three biggest questions are in the tell me about yourself, why should we hire you and what are your weaknesses guides. Story-based questions are covered separately in the behavioral questions for freshers bank.
About you
1. Tell me about yourself. Present, past, why this role, close, in sixty seconds. "I'm a final-year CSE student at VIT, comfortable in Java and SQL. I built a library system for our department and did a two-month backend internship. I'm applying because I want to start on production systems with proper mentoring."
2. Walk me through your resume. Highlights only, in order: degree, one or two projects, internship, one achievement. Do not read every line.
3. What are your strengths? Two, each with an example. "I finish what I start: when two members left our project, I completed their modules on time. And I explain clearly: I presented our project to the external examiner."
4. What are your weaknesses? One real weakness, an example, and the fix. "I try to solve problems alone too long. Now I ask after thirty minutes of being stuck, which cut wasted time in my final project."
5. Tell me about your family. Short and factual. "I'm from Nagpur. My father runs a shop, my mother is a homemaker, and my sister is in school. They support my relocating for work."
6. What are your hobbies? One or two with detail. "I play district-level badminton and read about business; I recently finished a book on the history of Infosys."
7. Describe yourself in three words. Pick words you can prove. "Reliable, curious, and calm under deadlines. The last one came from demoing our project two days after a server failure."
8. What is your biggest achievement so far? A specific one with a number. "Leading fest sponsorships to about two lakh rupees, the highest in four years."
9. Why is your percentage low in one year, or do you have backlogs? Own it, explain briefly, show the recovery. "My second-year score dropped to 62 because I over-committed to activities. I fixed my planning and scored 76 the next year. No active backlogs."
10. Tell me something not on your resume. Something human and positive. "I taught maths to two neighbourhood children through their board exams, which is where I learned to explain things patiently."
Motivation and goals
11. Why do you want to join our company? One specific reason. "Your structured fresher training, and the banking projects your Pune team works on, which match my final-year project."
12. Why should we hire you? Match, proof, commitment. "This role needs fundamentals, fast learning and communication. My core subjects were Java and DBMS, I was productive on a new codebase in two weeks during my internship, and I presented our project weekly. I want to go deep on one platform here."
13. Where do you see yourself in five years? Skill-based, not title-based. "A senior developer who owns a module end to end and mentors freshers."
14. Why did you choose this course or field? A real reason. "I built a website for my father's shop in class 11 and saw customers use it. That is still what I like about software."
15. What do you know about our company? Three facts. "Headquartered in Bengaluru, strong in banking and healthcare clients, and you opened a development centre in Indore this year."
16. What motivates you? "Seeing something I built being used. Our hostel app getting 200 users motivated me more than any grade."
17. What are your short-term and long-term goals? "Short term: clear your training with a strong rating and get onto a live project. Long term: become the person the team relies on for backend design."
18. Are you applying to other companies? Honest and calm. "Yes, I'm interviewing with two others, but this role is my first preference because of the training structure."
19. Why did you not go for higher studies? "I want to learn by building real systems now. If a master's makes sense later, I'll consider it with work experience behind me."
20. What would you do if you were not selected today? "Ask for feedback, work on it, and apply again in the next drive. I've done that before with a coding competition and cleared it the second year."
Situational questions
21. How do you handle pressure? "I break the work into pieces and finish the most important one first. When my demo and two exams fell in one week, I finished the demo early and scored above 75 in both exams."
22. What if your team lead assigns you a technology you have never used? "I'd take it. During my internship I learned Spring Boot from scratch and shipped a service in two months. I'd set a two-week target to be productive."
23. How do you handle criticism? "I ask what the person actually needs. When my guide said my reports were unstructured, I switched to a one-page format he later adopted for the batch."
24. What would you do if you disagreed with your manager? "Do what they asked first so nothing is blocked, then show the concern with evidence and offer an alternative. I did this with my internship mentor on a bug fix and he took the alternative."
25. How would you handle a teammate who is not contributing? "Talk to them privately first. In a college project, my teammate was stuck on SQL; we pair-worked for three evenings and he delivered his part."
26. What if you are given a deadline you think is impossible? "Say so early, with a plan: what can be delivered by the date and what cannot. A late surprise is worse than an early honest estimate."
27. How do you prioritise when everything is urgent? "By impact and dependency: what blocks others goes first. I keep a written list so nothing relies on memory."
28. Tell me about a mistake and what you learned. "I pushed a config change that broke a test environment for an hour. I reported it immediately, reverted, and wrote a checklist that other interns adopted."
29. What will you do if you get a better offer after joining us? "I'm not planning to job-hop. I want my first two years to be deep, not scattered, and I'll honour the commitment I make here."
30. How do you deal with a customer or user who is angry? "Listen fully, acknowledge the problem, fix what I can now and give a clear timeline for the rest. I did this as a fest volunteer when a sponsor's banner was misplaced."
Company and role
31. What do you understand about this role? Describe it in your words from the job description. "A Systems Engineer trainee learns the client's stack in training, then works on development or support tasks under a lead."
32. What if we place you in a support role instead of development? "I'd take it and do it well. Support teaches how systems fail, which makes better developers. I'd ask about a path to development later."
33. Are you comfortable with rotational or night shifts? Honest yes or no. "Yes, I'm fine with rotational shifts if the project needs them."
34. Do you know about our training programme? Read the careers page beforehand. "Yes, a structured training period on the technology stack followed by assessments before project allocation."
35. What do you think of our website or product? Give one honest positive and one suggestion. "The careers page explains the process well. The application form could show the status of each stage."
36. Who are our competitors? Name two or three. For an IT services company, the other large Indian IT firms; for a product company, its direct rivals. Know one thing that differentiates the company.
37. Do you know anyone working here? Answer honestly. If yes, say who and how you know them; it is not a disadvantage.
38. Do you have any questions for us? Always yes. "What does a typical first project look like for a fresher? And is the training classroom-based or on a live project?"
Salary, relocation, bond and notice period
39. What are your salary expectations? Campus: "I'm aware of the package for this role and comfortable with it." Off-campus: "Based on the fresher band for this role, I'd expect a range around it, and I'm flexible for the right opportunity."
40. Are you willing to relocate? "Yes, anywhere in India. I've discussed it with my family." If not: "I can relocate within south India; I have a family responsibility that keeps me nearby."
41. Are you okay with a service agreement or bond? "Yes. I understand it covers the training investment. I plan to stay and grow here, so it isn't a concern. Could you share the duration and terms?"
42. When can you join? "Immediately after my final exams in May," or "I'm available from the date you need."
43. What is your notice period? (for candidates already in a job or internship) State it exactly. "Thirty days, and I can request an early release if needed."
44. Are you willing to work on weekends if required? "Occasionally, for a release or an incident, yes. I'd expect it to be the exception, not the routine."
45. What if the salary is lower than you expected? "For my first job, learning and the role matter more than the number. I'd want to understand the growth and review cycle."
46. Would you accept a contract role instead of a permanent one? Answer honestly. "I'd prefer permanent, but I'm open to a contract if there is a path to conversion."
47. Are you open to working at a client location? "Yes. Working at a client site would teach me how requirements are actually decided."
48. Do you have a passport, or are you willing to travel abroad? "Yes, I have a valid passport and I'm open to onsite travel if the project needs it." If you do not: "Not yet, but I can apply immediately."
49. What are your expectations from the company? "Clear feedback, a mentor for the first year, and work that goes to real users."
50. Is there anything that would stop you from accepting an offer? "No. If the role, location and terms are as described, I'll accept."
How to prepare for the HR round
Do not memorise fifty answers. Prepare five stories from college and work, know your own resume line by line, decide your honest answers on relocation, shifts and the service agreement before the interview, and read the company's careers page the night before. Company-specific patterns are in the TCS, Infosys and Wipro question banks, and the project question that follows almost every fresher introduction is covered in how to explain your final-year project.
Then practise aloud with follow-ups. In a MockMate Practice session the interviewer persona asks these questions and reacts to your answers, pressing on the same points a real HR would: the project you mentioned, the reason you gave for joining, the flexibility you claimed. The report afterwards shows each answer with response timing, the coaching evidence behind every note, and the weaknesses that recur across sessions. Eligible accounts get three free Practice starts of up to ten minutes each. MockMate's Live assistance on Windows is a separate mode: use it only where the organisation or interviewer permits assistance and you have disclosed it, and choose Practice when permission is unclear.
Frequently asked questions
What is the HR round in an Indian IT interview?
It is usually the last round after the technical (TR) and sometimes managerial (MR) rounds. It checks communication, fit, flexibility on location and shifts, and whether you understand the offer terms such as the service agreement. It is eliminatory at most companies.
How long is a fresher HR round?
Fifteen to thirty minutes in campus drives, sometimes longer off-campus. Expect eight to fifteen questions, most of them from the list on this page.
What should I say about salary expectations as a fresher?
In campus hiring the CTC is fixed, so say you are aware of the package and comfortable with it. Off-campus, give a range based on the company's known fresher band and say you are flexible for the right role.
Is it okay to say no to relocation or night shifts?
Be honest. If you genuinely cannot relocate, say so with a reason; a false yes creates a problem after joining. If you can, say yes plainly, because flexibility is one of the things the HR round scores.
What is a service agreement or bond?
An agreement to stay with the company for a fixed period, often one to two years, or pay a stated amount if you leave early. Several Indian IT companies use it for freshers to cover training costs. Read the terms before you sign; asking about them in the HR round is normal.
