Managerial Round (MR): Meaning, What the Manager Tests and How to Prepare

The managerial round (MR) is the interview taken by a delivery or project manager, usually between the technical round and the HR round, in which the company decides whether it can trust you on a client project. It is a fixture of Indian IT services hiring: TCS runs it as a distinct round, and Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini and Cognizant run a version of it, sometimes merged with the technical or HR conversation. What the manager is testing

A technical interviewer asks whether you know things. A manager asks whether you will be a problem. Concretely:

• Ownership. Do you finish what you start, and do you say so when you cannot?
• Pressure. How do you behave when the deadline moves and the requirement changes?
• Communication. Can you explain a technical decision to a client who is not technical?
• Flexibility. Will you accept a different technology, location or shift?
• Consistency. Does the story you told in the TR round hold up when someone experienced pushes on it?
• Commitment. Will you stay past the training period and the first project?

Sample managerial round questions

1. Walk me through your project again, but tell me what you would do differently now.
2. Your module fails during client UAT the night before go-live. What do you do first?
3. Tell me about a time a teammate did not deliver. What did you do?
4. Why should I put you on my project instead of the other candidates today?
5. You are trained in Java and the project needs .NET. Are you okay with that?
6. Where do you see yourself in three years, honestly?
7. What is the one feedback you have received that you did not like?
8. Are you willing to relocate and work in shifts if the client is in the US?

Most of these are STAR method questions in disguise. The manager wants a real situation, your specific action and a result, and will interrupt a vague answer with "but what did you do?"

A concrete example

A candidate who cleared the TCS Digital technical round faces a 20-minute MR with a delivery manager. She is asked to summarise her project in one minute (she had practised a ten-minute version, and stumbled), then asked what she would do if the client changed the requirement two days before delivery. She says "I would inform my manager." The manager asks, "And then?" She has no next step. The feedback later: good technically, weak on ownership. The same question, answered as "I would confirm the change in writing, estimate the impact, tell my lead what can and cannot be done by the date, and propose a phased delivery", would have passed.

How to prepare

• Prepare a one-minute, three-minute and ten-minute version of your project explanation.
• Write six STAR stories: pressure, conflict, failure, initiative, learning fast, saying no.
• Decide your real answers on relocation, technology switch and shifts. Managers hear hesitation.
• Read one page about the company's business, not just its hiring process.
• Rehearse being interrupted. The hardest part of MR is not the questions; it is the follow-ups.
