HR Round: Meaning, Typical Questions and Whether It Is Eliminatory

HR round meaning: the final interview about you, salary, notice period, relocation and fit. Typical questions, whether it is eliminatory, and how to prepare.

Updated 3 min read

The HR round is the interview in which a human-resources executive checks whether you fit the company and whether the offer will work: your background, communication, salary expectation, notice period, willingness to relocate, and whether your resume matches your documents. In Indian IT hiring it is normally the last round, after the TR round and, at some companies, the managerial round.

What the HR round is for

The technical interviewer has already decided you can do the job. HR is asking three different questions:

  1. Will you accept the offer and join? Hence questions about CTC, location, shifts and bond.
  2. Will you stay? Hence questions about higher studies, career plans and "why this company".
  3. Is anything about you a risk? Hence questions about gaps, backlogs, resume claims and behaviour.

Typical HR round questions

QuestionWhat they are really checking
Tell me about yourselfCommunication and whether you can summarise
Why do you want to join us?Whether you know anything about the company
What is your expected CTC?Whether you understand the band; see CTC vs in-hand
Are you willing to relocate to any location?Almost always needs a yes in campus drives
Are you comfortable with night shifts or rotational shifts?Fit for support and BPO roles
Are you planning higher studies?Attrition risk
What is your notice period?Joining date; see notice period
Explain the gap in your educationConsistency with documents
Are you aware of the service agreement?Whether you will sign the bond; see service agreement
What are your weaknesses?Self-awareness
Do you have any questions for me?Interest

Behavioural questions ("tell me about a time you failed") also appear here for freshers, which is why the STAR method belongs in HR prep.

A concrete example

A candidate in an Infosys campus drive clears the technical interview and is called to a 15-minute HR conversation. The HR asks him to introduce himself, asks why Infosys, confirms he has no active backlogs and that his marksheets match the form, asks whether he is fine with training in Mysuru and posting anywhere in India, asks about the service agreement, and ends with "any questions?" He asks about the training structure, and the round ends. It felt easy, but two of his batchmates were not selected: one said she would be doing an MBA next year, and one refused relocation.

How to prepare

  • Write a 60-second self-introduction and say it out loud until it is natural.
  • Know the company: what it does, one recent news item, the role you applied for.
  • Decide your answers on relocation, shifts and higher studies before the day. Do not improvise them.
  • Know the salary band for the role and the difference between CTC and in-hand.
  • Bring every document; HR rounds often end with a document check.

The HR round is where confident candidates lose offers by talking too much or too little. A MockMate Practice session in the browser runs an HR-style conversation with an interviewer persona that follows up on vague answers, and its report shows each question, your answer, your response timing and coaching. Eligible accounts get three free Practice starts of up to ten minutes. Frequently asked questions

Is the HR round eliminatory?

It can be. Most candidates who reach HR get through, but people are rejected for unrealistic salary demands, refusing relocation or shifts, inconsistent resume details, or attitude. Treat it as a real round.

How long does an HR round last?

Ten to twenty minutes for freshers in a campus drive; twenty to forty minutes for experienced candidates, where salary negotiation and notice period take more time.

What documents should I keep ready for the HR round?

Marksheets from Class 10 onwards, degree or provisional certificate, photo ID, passport-size photos, and for experienced candidates the last three payslips, offer letter and relieving letter. Many companies collect these right after HR for background verification.
