AI Interview Assistant for Windows: Why a Native App Beats a Browser Extension

Most "AI interview assistant" products are browser extensions or web pages you keep open in a second tab. That is fine for a mock interview. It is a bad fit for a real one, where you are sharing a screen, running a proctored assessment, or simply trying to keep your attention on the interviewer instead of on a tab you have to alt-tab into.

This guide explains what changes when the assistant is a native Windows application, what MockMate's Windows companion does and does not do, and how to decide whether you should use Live assistance at all.

What a browser extension can and cannot do

A Chrome extension lives inside the browser. That gives it three hard limits during an interview:

• Audio. An extension can only hear what the browser tab gives it. If your interview runs in the desktop Teams or Zoom client, the extension hears nothing unless you route audio through a virtual cable.
• Screen sharing. When you share your screen, the extension's panel is painted into the shared image like any other browser element. Hiding it means closing it.
• Focus. Reading an answer means looking at another tab or a floating panel inside the same window, which is visible to a recruiter watching your eyes and your cursor.

Web-based "copilots" that open in a separate browser window have the same problems with one extra: a browser window is a large, obvious surface, and most of them need a screen-recording permission to read the question.

What a native Windows app does differently

A native application runs at the operating-system level, outside the browser. In MockMate's case the Windows companion does the following:

• Captures system audio and the microphone directly. It does not matter whether the interview is on Google Meet in Chrome, the Teams desktop client, or Zoom. Transcription follows the conversation with visible input health (microphone, system audio, transcription and reconnect states stay explicit on screen).
• Stays a compact tool window. It is a small always-on-top window you can move, resize, or hide with one key. It is not a fullscreen overlay and not a browser tab.
• Reads context from your session, not from the meeting. Before the round you attach a resume, a job description, notes or instructions. Answers are grounded in that fixed snapshot, and every answer is labelled with its source: transcript, manual text, screen text or screenshot.
• Captures screen context only when you ask. For a coding problem in an IDE or a shared document, you deliberately grab a screenshot or the visible text, review it in a queue, and remove it before sending if you change your mind. Nothing is captured silently.
• Lets you choose the model and depth. You pick the AI provider and model, and whether you want a fast direction or deeper reasoning. There is also an on-device model option for some answers.

The companion also includes Privacy Mode and capture resistance on supported Windows display paths. That is a real engineering feature, but it is platform-dependent, and MockMate does not market it as a guarantee of invisibility. If a meeting platform, an employer or an exam body prohibits assistance, the correct mode is Practice, not Live.

Setting up MockMate on Windows

1. Create an account at mock-mate.com/register and add a resume or a job description. This becomes the context for both Practice and Live.
2. Run a Practice session in the browser first. Practice is adaptive: questions respond to what you said, there are interviewer personas and follow-up pressure, and you get a report with question-level coaching. Ten minutes is enough to learn the rhythm.
3. Download the Windows companion from the download page once you are signed in. It installs like any Windows app.
4. Sign in to the companion with your MockMate account; it picks up the same session context you prepared on the web.
5. Check input health before the interview. The companion shows microphone, system audio and transcription status. If a state is red, fix it before the call, not during it.
6. Decide on the mode. If assistance is permitted and disclosed, start a Live session. If it is not, or you are unsure, stay in Practice. MockMate's Acceptable Use Policy and Trust Center spell this out.

How billing works for the Windows companion

There is no separate desktop subscription. Eligible accounts receive three free Practice starts and three free Live starts, each capped at ten minutes, tracked on the server so a reinstall does not reset them. After that, both modes draw from the same credit balance. As of September 2026 the packs are Starter (₹2,000 for 2 credits), Growth (₹5,000 for 5 credits) and Pro (₹10,000 for 12 credits), plus 18% GST. When you should not use Live assistance

Be honest with yourself here, because the product is. Live assistance is for interviews and meetings where the other side permits assistance or where you have disclosed it: a practice call with a mentor, a meeting where you want the agenda and notes close, a language-mixed conversation where you want the transcript in front of you. It is not for proctored assessments that ban assistance, and it is not a substitute for knowing your own resume. The report you get after every session exists so the next round needs less help, not more.
