HireVue: What an On-Demand Video Interview Is and How to Prepare for One

HireVue is an on-demand video interview platform: you record timed answers and recruiters or AI scoring review them. Format, what is scored, how to prepare.

Updated 3 min read

HireVue is a hiring platform whose best-known product is the on-demand video interview: instead of talking to a person, you open a link, read a question on screen, get a short time to think, and record your answer on camera within a time limit. Recruiters, and in some configurations a scoring model, review the recordings later. Large multinational employers use it for early screening, including campus and graduate hiring in India, because it lets them assess thousands of candidates without scheduling calls.

How the format works, as of September 2026

  • You receive an invitation with a deadline, often several days, and complete the interview whenever you like within that window, on a laptop or phone.
  • A typical set has four to eight questions. HireVue says most video assessments take under 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Each question usually gives about 30 seconds to think and two to three minutes to record. Some employers allow one re-take per question; many do not.
  • Questions are mostly behavioural ("tell me about a time you led a team") and situational ("a customer is angry about a delay; what do you do?"), sometimes with role-specific technical questions.
  • Some employers add game-based assessments (short cognitive and situational games) before or after the video part.

What is scored

Where the employer enables HireVue's assessment scoring, the company states that the model evaluates the content of the transcript: what you said, how relevant and structured it was. Facial expression and tone analysis were removed from its scoring. Human reviewers can watch recordings alongside any score. The practical implication is that a clear, structured, specific answer scores well, and a fluent but empty one does not.

A concrete example

A final-year student applies to a multinational bank's graduate programme and receives a HireVue link with a five-day deadline. There are six questions. Question two: "Describe a time you had to learn something quickly." She has 30 seconds to think and two minutes to answer. She uses the STAR method: a hackathon where her team switched from Flask to Django two days before submission, her role, what she did (read the docs, rebuilt the auth module, wrote a checklist for the others), and the result (a working demo, third place). Her answer ends at 1 minute 40 seconds. She does not fill the remaining time with repetition. Two weeks later she is invited to a live round.

How to prepare

  • Set up the room. Plain background, light on your face, laptop at eye level, wired earphones or a quiet room. Test the camera and microphone on the practice question HireVue offers.
  • Prepare six STAR stories that cover leadership, teamwork, failure, conflict, learning fast and customer focus. Most questions map to one of these.
  • Practise talking to a camera with a timer. Speaking to a lens for two minutes without feedback is a skill. Record yourself and watch the playback.
  • Aim for 90 seconds to two minutes. Answer, add one detail, stop.
  • Look at the camera, not at your own preview.

A MockMate Practice session in the browser is a good rehearsal for this format: it asks behavioural questions, follows up when your answer lacks a specific action or result, and gives you a report with your response timing and question-level coaching, so you can see whether your stories fit inside two minutes. MockMate's Live assistance is for interviews and meetings only where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure; a recorded HireVue assessment should be treated as a no-assistance setting unless the employer says otherwise, so Practice is the right mode for it.

  • Proctoring: the monitoring layer that often accompanies recorded assessments.
  • STAR method: the structure that scores well in transcript-based review.
  • Interview copilot: what live assistance tools are, and where they are and are not appropriate.
  • Mock interview: how to rehearse timed answers before the real recording.

Frequently asked questions

Is a HireVue interview a real interview or a test?

It is an assessment stage. There is no interviewer on the call; you record answers to preset questions within a time limit, and a recruiter or a scoring model reviews the recording later. Treat it with the same seriousness as a live round.

Does HireVue analyse my face or voice?

HireVue has said that where its assessment scoring is enabled, it analyses the transcript of what you said rather than facial, video or audio features. Companies can also turn scoring off and have humans review every recording. Either way, what you say matters most.

Can I use an AI helper during a HireVue interview?

Only if the employer explicitly allows it, which is rare for a recorded assessment. Treat HireVue as a no-assistance setting unless told otherwise, and use MockMate's Practice mode to rehearse beforehand instead.
