Mock Interview: Meaning, Types and What a Useful One Includes
Mock interview meaning: a rehearsal that copies the real thing and ends in feedback. Peer, mentor and AI types, what a good one includes, how MockMate works.
A mock interview is a rehearsal of a job interview: someone (a friend, a mentor, a placement officer, or software) plays the interviewer, asks the kind of questions the real interviewer would ask, and then gives you feedback on what you said and how you said it. The point is to make your mistakes somewhere they do not cost you an offer. In Hindi it is often explained as "interview ka abhyaas"; see mock interview meaning in Hindi.
Types of mock interview

Most candidates get the best result from combining an AI mock for repetition with one mentor session for judgement.
What a useful mock interview includes
A mock interview that is only "answer these ten questions" teaches little. A useful one has:
- The right questions for your role and level. Fresher software questions are not senior data-analyst questions.
- Your own material. Questions that come from your resume and the job description, because that is what the real interviewer reads.
- Follow-ups. The real test is the second question: "why?", "what did you do next?", "what would you change?"
- Time pressure. Real rounds are short. Ten minutes with a clock changes how you answer.
- Feedback you can act on. Not "good job" but "your STAR answer had no result" or "you took 40 seconds to start every answer".
- A record. Something you can read the next day and compare with the next attempt.

A concrete example
A 2026 graduate has a TCS interview on Saturday. On Wednesday she runs a ten-minute Practice session with her resume and the TCS job description, choosing a technical focus. The report shows she took 35 seconds to begin her project explanation and that her SQL answer named a join but could not say what it returned. On Thursday she rewrites the project intro to one minute and revises joins with a real table. On Friday a second session: the project explanation starts in 5 seconds, the follow-up on joins is answered, and the new weakness the report flags is a vague answer to "why TCS". She fixes that on Friday night. Saturday's interview asked all three.
Mock interview versus interview copilot
A mock interview happens before the round and improves you. An interview copilot works during a round and assists you. Frequently asked questions
How many mock interviews should I do before a real one?
Three is a reasonable minimum: one to find the weak answers, one to fix them, one to confirm. Candidates preparing for a specific company or a senior role often do more, spaced over a week or two.
Is an AI mock interview as good as one with a person?
It is different. A person reads body language and knows the company; an AI is available at 11 p.m., never gets tired of the same question, and gives a written report. Use an AI mock for repetition and timing, and a mentor or senior for judgement.
Does MockMate's mock interview have a time limit?
