Fresher: Meaning, Who Qualifies and What Fresher Interviews Actually Ask

A fresher is a candidate with no full-time work experience, almost always a recent graduate looking for a first job. The word is Indian English; job portals, campus notices and company programmes use it as a formal category ("fresher hiring", "freshers welcome", "0 to 1 years"). Being a fresher decides which drives you can apply to, which tests you sit, what the interview asks and how the package is fixed.

Who counts as a fresher

• A final-year student sitting for campus placement.
• A graduate from the current or previous one or two batches with no full-time job yet. The TCS NQT, for example, lists the 2024, 2025 and 2026 batches with 0 to 2 years of experience as eligible for its 2026 cycle.
• Someone with internships, training certificates or freelance work but no payslips from a full-time role.

You generally stop being a fresher once you have about a year of full-time experience documented by an offer letter, payslips and a relieving letter. Companies' definitions differ; the eligibility line on each drive is what counts.

What fresher interviews actually ask

Interviewers know you have no work history, so they test the things that predict whether you will learn fast:

1. "Tell me about yourself" and "walk me through your project" in the TR round.
2. Fundamentals from the second and third year: one language, OOP, SQL, data structures, operating systems.
3. A small program written live.
4. Behavioural questions with college examples: teamwork, failure, pressure; see STAR method.
5. HR round commitment questions: relocation, shifts, higher studies, bond, expected CTC.

A concrete example

A 2026 B.Tech graduate with no offer from campus starts applying off-campus in January. He is a fresher, so he registers for the TCS NQT, applies to the Infosys off-campus test, and attends two walk-ins. He has a six-week internship and a final-year project on his resume. In his first interview he is asked to explain the project (he had rehearsed it), to write a program that checks whether a number is prime (he had not practised writing on paper and froze), and whether he was open to relocation (he said "I will think about it"). He was not selected. Two weeks and four mock interviews later, the same questions came at another drive; he wrote the program in three minutes and said yes to relocation, and got the offer.

How to prepare as a fresher

• Learn one language deeply and write thirty small programs by hand.
• Prepare your project in one-minute, three-minute and ten-minute versions.
• Collect five college stories for behavioural questions.
• Decide your answers on relocation, shifts, bond and higher studies before the first interview.
