NQT (TCS National Qualifier Test): Meaning, Pattern and What Comes After It
NQT means TCS National Qualifier Test: the 190-minute Foundation and Advanced test that decides Ninja, Digital or Prime. Sections, eligibility and what follows.
NQT stands for National Qualifier Test, the online test Tata Consultancy Services uses to hire freshers across India. Clearing it is the entry ticket to TCS interviews, and your score decides which tier you are considered for: Ninja (the standard entry role), Digital or Prime (higher-paid, harder tracks). It is the single most-searched placement test in India because TCS is the largest fresher recruiter in the country.
Who can take it
As of September 2026, the TCS All India NQT Hiring page lists the 2024, 2025 and 2026 batches as eligible, with 0 to 2 years of experience, and asks for a minimum of 60 percent aggregate or equivalent CGPA in Class 10, Class 12, diploma (if applicable), graduation and post-graduation, with no pending backlog at the time of selection. Eligibility changes each cycle, so read the live page before registering.
Test pattern (2026 cycle, as reported by placement-prep sites)
The 2026 NQT is one integrated test of about 190 minutes and 83 questions, in two parts:
| Part | Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation (Part A, 75 min) | Numerical Ability | 20 | 25 min |
| Verbal Ability | 25 | 25 min | |
| Reasoning Ability | 20 | 25 min | |
| Advanced (Part B, 115 min) | Advanced Quantitative and Reasoning | 15 | 25 min |
| Advanced Coding | 3 problems | 90 min |
No negative marking is reported for either part. The Foundation score decides Ninja eligibility; Digital and Prime need a strong Advanced score as well. Sections are timed individually, so you cannot borrow minutes from Verbal to finish Coding.
NQT versus TCS iON NQT
Two different tests share the name. TCS All India NQT Hiring is TCS's own free recruitment test for the batches named on its careers page. TCS iON NQT is a paid, score-sharing test run by TCS iON, whose scores other corporates also accept. Registering for the wrong one is a common and expensive mistake.
A concrete example
A 2026 B.Tech graduate registers for the September cycle, sits the 190-minute test at a centre, and does well in Foundation but solves only one of the three coding problems. Her score puts her in the Ninja band. Two weeks later she is called for a same-day TR, MR and HR at a TCS office. Had she solved two coding problems, she would have been considered for Digital, with a deeper technical interview and a higher package. The difference between Ninja and Digital for her was ninety minutes of coding practice a day in the month before the test.
How to prepare
- Practise Foundation sections against the clock: 25 minutes per section is tight.
- For Advanced Coding, solve medium-difficulty problems in one language you can type fast. Three problems in 90 minutes means about 30 minutes each, including reading.
- Keep documents ready: TCS verifies marks and batch during the process.
- Prepare for the interviews before the result, not after. Shortlists move fast.
The interviews after NQT are where most candidates are actually rejected. A MockMate Practice session in the browser runs a TCS-style technical or managerial round from your resume, includes a code editor for the technical part, and gives you a report with question-level coaching. Use Practice for preparation; use MockMate's Live assistance only where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure. TCS tests and interviews are proctored assessment settings; Practice is the right mode for them.

Frequently asked questions
Is TCS NQT the same as TCS iON NQT?
No. TCS All India NQT Hiring is TCS's own free fresher-hiring test. TCS iON NQT is a separate paid, score-sharing test run by TCS iON that other companies also use. Check which one your drive asks for before registering.
Is there negative marking in the NQT?
No, as of September 2026 the pattern reported for the 2026 cycle has no negative marking in either the Foundation or the Advanced section, so attempt every question.
What happens after I clear the NQT?
Shortlisted candidates are called for interviews: typically a technical round (TR), a managerial round (MR) and an HR round, often on the same day. Ninja shortlists are usually TR plus HR; Digital and Prime shortlists get a deeper technical round.
