GenC (Cognizant): Meaning, Tracks, Eligibility and Selection Rounds

GenC is the brand Cognizant uses for its campus hiring of freshers in India. Instead of one "fresher" role, Cognizant sorts candidates into tracks: GenC (standard entry level), GenC Pro, GenC Next (a premium developer track) and GenC Elevate. The track decides the assessment difficulty, the role after training and the package. Understanding which track a drive is for tells you what to prepare.

The tracks, as of September 2026

Third-party placement sites report that Cognizant planned around 25,000 graduate hires in its FY26-27 campus cycle. Salary figures are candidate- and site-reported; Cognizant publishes them through campus brochures, not on a public page, so treat them as indicative.

Eligibility basics

• Batches: 2025 and 2026 graduates for the current cycle.
• Degrees: BE, B.Tech, ME, M.Tech for engineering tracks; BCA, BSc, BA, BCom, BBA, BVoc, BMS and similar three-year degrees for GenC non-engineering intakes.
• Marks: 60 percent for GenC and GenC Pro, 70 percent for GenC Next, in every stage from Class 10 onwards. A 59.9 does not qualify.
• No standing arrears (active backlogs) at the time of the process.

Selection rounds

All tracks go through the same shape: a communication assessment, an aptitude and technical assessment, and a technical or subject-matter-expert interview, followed by HR formalities. GenC Next adds harder coding in the assessment and a deeper technical interview. The assessments are online and proctored; see proctoring.

A concrete example

A final-year IT student registers through her college's Superset portal for the on-campus Cognizant drive. She has 72 percent throughout, so she is eligible for GenC Next as well as GenC. The assessment has a coding section she finds hard; she clears the GenC cut-off but not the GenC Next one. Her interview is a 25-minute technical conversation on her project, SQL and Java basics, then a short HR call about relocation. She receives a GenC offer. Her friend with 68 percent was never in the GenC Next pool because of the 70 percent rule, regardless of his coding score.

How to prepare for GenC

• Confirm your track eligibility from the marks rule before spending time on GenC Next-level coding.
• The communication assessment is real: practise speaking clearly for two minutes on a given topic.
• For the technical interview, prepare your project, one language, SQL and basic data structures; see TR round.
