Mock Interview for Freshers: Practise TR and HR Rounds Before Campus Placement
Mock interview for freshers: what TR and HR rounds ask in campus drives, how a MockMate Practice session runs from your resume and project, and a 7-day plan.
The first interview of your life should not be the one that decides your first job. Yet that is how campus placement works for most students: months of aptitude practice, then a technical and HR conversation they have never rehearsed, with a company they researched the night before. The candidates who get offers are not always the ones who know more. They are the ones who have said "explain your project" out loud enough times that the answer starts in five seconds instead of thirty.
This page covers what campus and off-campus interviewers actually ask freshers, how a MockMate Practice session runs for a fresher round, what the report shows, and a seven-day plan that fits between the online test result and the interview day.
Who this is for
- Final-year students registered for campus placement drives: TCS NQT, Infosys, Wipro NTH, Cognizant GenC, Accenture, Capgemini, HCLTech and college-specific companies.
- 2024 to 2026 graduates applying off-campus or attending walk-ins after an unplaced campus season.
- Non-CS graduates (ECE, mechanical, civil, BSc, BCA, BCom) applying for IT services, support or analyst roles where the technical round tests basics, not depth.
- Students whose written English is fine but who have never held a ten-minute professional conversation.
What the interviewer actually asks
Fresher rounds mix technical and HR questions, often in one sitting. Ten that appear almost every time, with what a strong answer contains.
- "Tell me about yourself." Strong answer: sixty seconds, degree and college, one project, one skill, why this role; no family history, no hobbies list.
- "Explain your final-year project." Strong answer: the problem, your part, the technology and why, one thing that went wrong, in under two minutes; see how to explain your final-year project.
- "Which programming language are you most comfortable with?" followed by a question in it. Strong answer: name one, then handle the basic (Java:
==versus.equals(); Python: list versus tuple; C: pointer basics) without hedging. - "Write a program to check for a palindrome" or "find the largest element in an array." Strong answer: say the approach, write it cleanly, test it aloud with an empty input.
- "What is a primary key and a foreign key? Write a simple join." Strong answer: one line each, then a two-table join that you can say the output of.
- "Explain OOP concepts." Strong answer: encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, each with an example from your project rather than from a textbook.
- "What do you know about our company?" Strong answer: what it does, one recent news item, the role you are interviewing for, and one honest reason it interests you.
- "Are you willing to relocate anywhere in India, work in shifts, and sign the service agreement?" Strong answer: a clear yes, decided before the day; a hesitant yes reads as a no. See service agreement.
- "Do you have any backlogs? Why did your percentage drop in the fifth semester?" Strong answer: factual, brief, no excuses, and what changed after.
- "Are you planning higher studies? Where do you see yourself in five years?" Strong answer: honest, consistent between the two questions, and framed around growth in the role.
Every one has a follow-up. "Explain your project" is followed by "why that database?"; "yes to relocation" is followed by "so Bhubaneswar in the night shift is fine?"
How a MockMate Practice session runs for a fresher
Practice runs in the browser; nothing to install.
- Attach your resume and the job description from the drive (the pre-placement talk slides or the careers page). Set the role, seniority to entry level, and a focus area such as "Java and SQL basics" or "HR round".
- Pick the round. A technical round includes a code editor, so the palindrome question is something you write. An HR round covers the introduction, company and commitment questions.
- Adaptive follow-ups. The interviewer persona reacts to your answer. A project explanation that skips your own role gets "what did you build personally?"; a vague OOP answer gets "show me polymorphism in your code".
- Set your language. Many campus HR conversations are Hinglish; you set your spoken language and MockMate works in Hinglish and other configured languages.
- Ten minutes per free start, which is the length of a typical fresher round. Eligible accounts get three free Practice starts, tracked server-side.
- A report at the end. Details below.
For company-specific rounds, the TCS mock interview and Infosys mock interview pages map each company's rounds to Practice modes.
What the report tells you
- Question-level answers with coaching: "project explanation named the stack but not your role" or "OOP answer used the textbook example".
- Response timing: how long before you started each answer. For freshers this number is the most useful thing in the report; a thirty-second pause before "tell me about yourself" is fixable in a day once you can see it.
- Coaching evidence: the phrases behind each note.
- Recurring weaknesses: "hedges on commitment questions", "does not test code", "answers end without a conclusion".
- A recommended next practice: the round type and focus to run next.
A 7-day prep plan
| Day | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Baseline Practice session, technical focus, with resume and the drive's JD | Report: top three weaknesses |
| 2 | Project: write the one-minute, three-minute and ten-minute versions; know why each technology was chosen | Three scripts |
| 3 | One language: twenty small programs by hand (strings, arrays, loops, recursion), then OOP concepts mapped to your project | Twenty programs |
| 4 | DBMS and SQL: keys, normalisation, joins on a real table; plus OS and networking basics for CS students | Ten queries and one page of notes |
| 5 | HR: self-introduction cut to sixty seconds; company research; decisions on relocation, shifts, bond, higher studies | Decided answers |
| 6 | Second Practice session (HR focus) and a third (technical) if you have the starts | Reports compared with day 1 |
| 7 | Documents laid out, two questions to ask the interviewer, rest | Ready |
Common mistakes freshers make in campus rounds
Placement interviewers see the same errors every season, and the Practice report surfaces most of them as timing or coaching notes.
- The thirty-second start. A long pause before "tell me about yourself" or "explain your project". The content is usually fine; the delay reads as unprepared. Rehearsal fixes it in a day.
- Listing four languages. The interviewer picks the weakest one. Say "Java is my strongest; I have used Python for one project" and the questions stay where you are strong.
- The textbook OOP answer. Animal and Dog classes instead of the classes in your own project. Interviewers hear the textbook version fifty times a day.
- "I will think about it" on relocation. Campus offers are pan-India by default. A hesitant answer to relocation, shifts or the service agreement is read as an early attrition risk. Decide before the day.
- Hiding the backlog or the percentage drop. The marksheets are on the table. A one-line factual explanation and what changed afterwards is enough; an excuse is not.
- No questions at the end. "No sir" wastes the one moment the interviewer expects you to show interest. Two prepared questions about training or the first project are enough.
None of these is about knowledge. All of them are fixed by saying the answers out loud before the day.
Honest limits
- Practice is a browser product; Live is Windows-only. The mock interview needs a modern browser. MockMate's Live assistance companion runs only on Windows 10 and 11; there is no Mac, iOS or Android app.
- Live is for permitted settings only. Use Live assistance only where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure; use Practice when permission is unclear. Campus tests are proctored and campus interviews do not permit assistance; for placements, Practice is the only appropriate mode.
- It does not know your college's placement rules. One-offer policies, slab rules and drive schedules come from your placement cell.
- It does not replace the aptitude test preparation. The online test eliminates more candidates than the interview; see aptitude test.
- Three free starts, ten minutes each. After that, credits apply (as of September 2026: Starter ₹2,000 for 2 credits, Growth ₹5,000 for 5, Pro ₹10,000 for 12; one credit is about sixty minutes). See pricing.
For written question banks with sample answers, see HR round questions for freshers and behavioral questions for freshers.
Frequently asked questions
Is the mock interview free for freshers?
Eligible accounts get three free Practice starts, each capped at ten minutes, tracked server-side. That is three short rounds with reports before any payment. After that, credits apply.
What if I have no internship or work experience?
Attach a resume with your final-year project, coursework and any hackathon or club work. The persona builds the questions from that, which is exactly what a campus interviewer does.
Does it cover both technical and HR questions?
Yes. Run a technical round with the code editor for the TR part, and an HR round for the commitment and self-introduction questions. Most freshers need both.
Can I practise in Hinglish?
You set your spoken language, and MockMate works in Hinglish and other configured languages. Practise in whatever mix the real interview will use.
Can I use MockMate during my campus interview?
No. Campus tests are proctored and campus interviews do not permit assistance. MockMate's Live assistance is only for settings where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure; for placements, use Practice beforehand.
