Walk-in Interview: Meaning, How It Works in India and What to Carry

A walk-in interview is one you attend without an appointment. How walk-ins work in India, same-day rounds, documents to carry, and how to prepare in a day.

Updated 4 min read

A walk-in interview is a hiring event where candidates come to the company's office or a venue on a published date and time, without a prior appointment or individual invitation, and are interviewed the same day. The employer announces the role, the date, the venue, the eligibility and the documents to bring; you turn up, register at the desk, and go through the rounds in a queue with everyone else who came.

Where walk-ins are common in India

Walk-ins are the standard route for high-volume roles: BPO and customer-support executives, inside sales, retail and store staff, pharma and medical representatives, staff nurses and paramedics, hospitality, delivery and logistics supervisors, and some IT services positions such as support engineers, testers and data-entry roles. They are advertised on Naukri, Indeed, LinkedIn, company career pages, newspaper classifieds and, increasingly, WhatsApp and Telegram job groups. For a fresher without a campus offer, walk-ins are often the first real interview.

What actually happens on the day

  1. Registration and document check. You fill a form and show your certificates and ID. Missing documents can end the day here.
  2. A screening test. For support roles a typing or voice-and-accent test; for technical roles a short aptitude test or a written technical paper; for sales roles sometimes a group discussion.
  3. HR screening. A short conversation about your background, salary expectation, shifts and joining date; see HR round.
  4. Manager round. The team lead or operations manager asks role-specific questions and decides.
  5. Offer. On the spot, or a call within a few days, followed by background verification.

Expect to wait. A well-attended walk-in can mean two to five hours at the venue for fifteen minutes of actual interviewing.

What to carry

  • Updated resume, five to ten printed copies.
  • Passport-size photographs.
  • Original and photocopies of Class 10, Class 12, diploma and degree marksheets and certificates.
  • Government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, passport or driving licence).
  • For experienced candidates: last three payslips, offer letter, relieving or experience letter.
  • A pen, a bottle of water and a charged phone with the notice saved on it.

A concrete example

A B.Com graduate sees a notice for a walk-in at a BPO in Noida: "Customer Support Executive, freshers welcome, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., carry resume and ID." She reaches at 9:40 and is number 38 in the queue. Registration takes twenty minutes; a typing and voice test takes fifteen; she then waits ninety minutes for a five-minute HR conversation about night shifts and a ₹2.4 LPA package, followed by a ten-minute round with an operations manager who asks how she would handle an angry customer. She is told to expect a call. The call comes two days later with an offer and a document list for verification.

How to prepare in one day

  • Prepare a 45-second introduction and practise it out loud; every round starts with it.
  • Decide your answers on shifts, salary and joining date before you leave the house.
  • Read the company's website for ten minutes so "why us" has an answer.
  • Prepare two examples for "tell me about a time you handled a difficult person"; the STAR method fits in a short round.
  • Dress formally, arrive early, be polite to the desk staff; they often pass notes to HR.

If you have an evening before the walk-in, a MockMate Practice session in the browser lets you run a short HR-style round for the role, with follow-up questions and a report that shows your response timing and coaching. Eligible accounts get three free Practice starts of up to ten minutes. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to apply online before a walk-in interview?

Usually not; that is the point of a walk-in. Some companies now ask you to register on a link or carry a printed job-portal application to speed up the queue. Read the notice carefully.

How many rounds happen on the same day?

Two to four, depending on the role: a document check, an aptitude, typing or voice test, an HR screening, and a round with the hiring or operations manager. Offers are sometimes made on the spot and sometimes within a week.

Is a walk-in interview only for freshers?

No. Walk-ins are common for BPO, customer support, retail, pharma sales, nursing, hospitality and some IT services roles at all experience levels. Freshers use them most because no referral or campus is needed.
