LPA Meaning: What 'Lakhs Per Annum' Means in an Indian Salary Offer

LPA means lakhs per annum, the yearly CTC in lakhs of rupees. What 4.5 LPA is per month, how it differs from in-hand pay, and how to quote it in an interview.

Updated 3 min read

LPA stands for lakhs per annum: the yearly salary expressed in lakhs of rupees. One lakh is ₹1,00,000, so an offer of "4.5 LPA" means ₹4,50,000 per year. In Indian job listings, placement notices and interviews, LPA almost always refers to the CTC (cost to company), not the money you take home each month.

Why India uses LPA

The Indian numbering system groups digits in lakhs (1,00,000) and crores (1,00,00,000) rather than millions. Saying "twelve lakh" is quicker than "one point two million", so recruiters, placement cells and job portals settled on LPA as the unit. You will see it written as LPA, "lakh p.a.", "lacs per annum" or just "package": "the package is 6.75."

LPA to monthly: a quick reference

These are rough monthly gross figures (yearly CTC divided by 12, minus a typical employer PF and benefits share). Actual in-hand is lower after your own PF, professional tax and income tax. See CTC vs in-hand for the full breakdown.

CTCYearly (₹)Monthly CTC (₹)Typical monthly in-hand (₹, approx.)
3.5 LPA3,50,00029,16724,000 to 26,000
4.5 LPA4,50,00037,50030,000 to 33,000
6.75 LPA6,75,00056,25045,000 to 50,000
8 LPA8,00,00066,66753,000 to 58,000
12 LPA12,00,0001,00,00078,000 to 85,000

The ranges are illustrations. A company with a high variable component or a large joining bonus inside the CTC will pay less per month than one with the same LPA but mostly fixed pay.

A concrete example

A campus notice says: "Role: Systems Engineer. CTC: 4.5 LPA. Location: pan-India." A student reads that as ₹37,500 a month. The first salary credit is about ₹30,000, because the employer's PF share and gratuity were inside the 4.5, and the student's own PF and professional tax came out of the gross. Nothing went wrong; the notice quoted LPA as CTC, as every notice does. Knowing this in advance prevents the "salary is less than promised" feeling in the first month.

How LPA comes up in interviews

Three HR round questions use it:

  1. "What is your current CTC?" Quote the LPA on your last offer letter, and say what part is fixed. Do not inflate it; background verification checks it.
  2. "What is your expected CTC?" Give a range in LPA, based on the role's known band, and ask about the fixed component. For a fresher in a campus drive the number is usually fixed, so the honest answer is "the package announced for this role is fine."
  3. "Are you okay with the package?" Usually asked when the company suspects you will leave early. Answer with reference to the role and learning, not only the number.

Practising these answers out loud helps more than reading about them. A MockMate Practice session runs in the browser, lets you set your target role and seniority, and the HR persona asks about current and expected CTC and pushes back if the answer is vague; the report shows your response timing and what a stronger answer would contain. • CTC vs in-hand: why the monthly credit is smaller than LPA divided by 12.
  • Campus placement: where LPA bands like 3.5, 4.5 and 6.75 come from.
  • Fresher: whose offers are most often quoted in LPA.
  • Notice period: the other offer-letter line to read before accepting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the full form of LPA?

Lakhs per annum. One lakh is ₹1,00,000, so 6 LPA is ₹6,00,000 a year. It almost always refers to CTC, not the amount you receive each month.

How much is 4.5 LPA per month in hand?

Roughly ₹30,000 to ₹33,000 a month, depending on how the company splits basic, allowances, employer PF and variable pay. Divide by 12 for the monthly CTC (₹37,500), then subtract employer contributions and your own deductions.

Is LPA used outside India?

Rarely. Most other countries quote annual salary in thousands (for example 60k) or monthly pay. LPA is an Indian convention built on the lakh, which is 100,000.
