Interview Copilot: Meaning, How It Works and When Using One Is Acceptable

An interview copilot is software that listens to a live interview or meeting, transcribes what is being said, and suggests answers or talking points to you in real time. The name borrows from aviation: the copilot does not fly the plane, it helps the pilot. In practice, an interview copilot is a transcript plus an AI that reads the transcript and your own material (resume, job description, notes) and proposes what you might say next.

What an interview copilot does

Most products share these parts:

• Transcription: captures the interviewer's audio and, usually, your microphone, and turns speech into text with low delay.
• Answer suggestions: an AI model reads the latest question and drafts a response, ideally grounded in your resume and the job description rather than generic text.
• A small window: sits beside the meeting app so you can glance at it while looking at the camera.
• Optional screen reading: for coding rounds, captures a shared problem statement so the AI can help with it.

They differ in whether they run inside the browser (an extension) or as a separate desktop app, whether they show where each answer came from, which languages they handle, and how honestly they describe visibility during screen sharing.

How MockMate's version works

MockMate's Live assistance runs as a native Windows 10/11 companion app, not a browser extension. During an authorised session it transcribes the conversation (microphone and system audio) with visible input health, grounds answers in a fixed snapshot of the resume, job description and notes you attached before the session, and labels every answer with its source: transcript, manual text, screen text or screenshot. Screen context is user-initiated: you deliberately capture a screenshot or visible text, review it in a queue, and can remove it before sending. You choose the AI provider and model and the answer depth, and transcription and answers work in Hinglish and other configured languages. When using one is acceptable

This is the part most vendors skip. An interview copilot is legitimate when the other side has agreed to it or the rules allow it: a mentor-run mock round, a calibration call where you want the transcript in front of you, a client meeting where your notes and the brief should be close, a mixed-language conversation where a live transcript helps you follow. It is not legitimate in a round where assistance is prohibited, in any proctored test, or in a recorded assessment such as HireVue unless the employer says otherwise.

A concrete example

A working professional has a recorded, permitted practice round with a mentor over Google Meet. She starts a MockMate Live session on Windows, attaches her resume and the job description, and sets her spoken language to Hinglish because the mentor mixes languages. During the call the transcript scrolls beside Meet; when the mentor asks about a project trade-off, a suggestion appears labelled "from transcript", and she uses it as a direction rather than reading it aloud. Afterwards she has the transcript to review. In the real interview a week later, where the company's rules did not permit assistance, she used nothing; the preparation was the point.

Copilot versus mock interview

A copilot helps during; a mock interview helps before. For most candidates, especially freshers facing proctored tests and campus rounds, the mock interview is the tool that changes outcomes, because it exposes the weak answers while there is still time to fix them.
