AI Interview Assistant for Zoom Calls (Windows): Share Options, Share Sound and What Stays Hidden

Zoom is still the default for startup interviews, US-client rounds scheduled at Indian midnight, and a lot of recruiter screens. It has the richest sharing menu of the three big meeting apps, which is exactly why candidates get confused about what the interviewer can see. This page uses Zoom's own support articles to explain the share options, what "Share sound" really does, how the MockMate Windows companion behaves next to the Zoom desktop client, how to set it up, and the limits you should expect.

How a Zoom interview works

The interviewer sends a zoom.us link. On Windows, the link opens the Zoom desktop client if it is installed, or offers "join from your browser." Either way you end up in the same meeting with the same controls: mute, video, chat, reactions and Share Screen.

A typical technical round on Zoom has three phases that matter for any AI assistant:

1. Conversation. The interviewer's voice plays through your Windows default output device. Anything that wants to transcribe them has to hear that device.
2. Sharing. Either the interviewer shares a problem statement or you share your editor, a project, or a document. Zoom's share dialog is where most candidate mistakes happen.
3. A second tool. Coding rounds often pair Zoom with a browser-based editor or an assessment platform that has its own monitoring. That tool's rules are separate from Zoom's.

Zoom share options: screen, window, portion, and what the interviewer sees

Zoom's "Sharing your screen or desktop on Zoom" article lists the desktop client's options under three tabs.

Below the main selection sit two checkboxes. Share sound means, in Zoom's words, "any sound played by your computer will be shared in the meeting." Optimize for video sharing is for full-screen video clips. When the share starts, participants see a notice that they can now see your shared screen or content.

Zoom's article on sharing computer audio adds three details worth knowing:

• Share sound can be switched between Mono and Stereo (high fidelity) from the small arrow next to the option.
• The Advanced tab has a Computer Audio option that shares audio without showing your screen at all; the article says participants "will be able to listen to your music without seeing your screen."
• On Windows 10, if many applications are open, only some appear as sharing options; Zoom advises closing unnecessary apps and retrying.

For a candidate, the takeaways are:

• Share a specific application window when you present code or a document. Only that application is sent.
• Portion of screen (Advanced tab) shares only a region inside a movable border, useful for one part of a large monitor.
• Entire screen sends the display. Assume every window on it is visible, including any always-on-top helper.
• Share sound is about audio, not text. It streams what your computer plays. A helper that plays no audio sends nothing through it.

• Hinglish works. Set your spoken language and transcription plus answers follow mixed Hindi-English conversation.

The companion changes nothing about what Zoom sends. Window share still sends the window; entire-screen share still sends the screen.

Setup steps before a Zoom interview

1. Register at mock-mate.com/register and attach your resume and the job description.

4. Align the audio device. In Zoom's audio settings, pick the speaker that matches the Windows default output. If they differ, the companion may hear nothing. Watch the system-audio indicator.
5. Test on a personal Zoom meeting. Start your own meeting, join from a phone as a second participant, speak from both sides, and check the transcript. Use one of the three free ten-minute Live starts for this.
6. Rehearse the share dialog. Practise selecting a single application window and, if your monitor is large, the portion-of-screen option. Confirm on the phone what the other side sees. Try the one-key hide while Zoom has focus.
7. Choose the mode honestly. Use Live assistance only where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure. Use Practice when permission is unclear.

Known limits on Zoom

• Audio device mismatch between Zoom and Windows is the most common reason a transcript is empty. Fix it before the call.
• Speakers cause double pickup. If Zoom plays through laptop speakers, your microphone hears the interviewer as well. A headset gives a cleaner transcript.
• Latency. Transcription is fast; a full answer takes longer. Use suggestions for direction.
• Zoom is not the proctor. If the round uses an assessment platform with its own monitoring, that platform's rules govern. The companion's Windows capture resistance is not a statement about any proctoring product.
• Windows only. No Mac, iOS or Android companion. Practice runs in any modern browser, including on a Mac.
• Free allowance is capped. Three Live starts and three Practice starts of ten minutes each, tracked on the server. Then credits: as of September 2026, Starter ₹2,000 for 2 credits, Growth ₹5,000 for 5, Pro ₹10,000 for 12; one credit is about sixty minutes, billed in thirty-minute blocks with a ten-minute grace window. Ethics on Zoom interviews

Zoom interviews with overseas clients are often recorded, and many employers ask directly whether AI was used. Answer truthfully. A helper is appropriate in a mock round with a mentor, an internal calibration call, a client meeting where you want notes and the JD beside you, or an interview where the interviewer has agreed. It is not appropriate where assistance is prohibited. When permission is unclear, Practice is the stronger choice anyway: run the round in the browser the night before, read the report, and go into the Zoom call needing nothing on top.
