HR Mock Interview: Practise the HR Round with Follow-Ups and a Report

HR mock interview online: the questions HR actually asks (tell me about yourself, CTC, notice, relocation), how a MockMate round runs, and a 7-day plan.

Updated 7 min read

The HR round is the interview candidates prepare least for and lose most avoidably. By the time you reach it, the company has decided you can do the job. HR is deciding whether you will accept, join, stay and cause no trouble. The questions look soft, which is why people improvise, and improvised answers to "what is your expected CTC" and "are you planning higher studies" are how offers disappear at the last step.

This page lists the questions HR actually asks in Indian campus and off-campus drives, what a strong answer contains, how a MockMate Practice session runs for the HR round, what the report shows, and a seven-day plan. For the definition and the round structure, see the HR round glossary entry.

Who this is for

  • Freshers in campus placement who will face a ten- to twenty-minute HR conversation at TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture or Capgemini after the technical round.
  • Walk-in candidates for BPO, support, sales and retail roles, where the HR screening is the main round.
  • Experienced candidates who have cleared the technical rounds and now face a salary, notice-period and joining-date negotiation.
  • Anyone whose English or confidence wobbles when the questions turn to themselves rather than to a subject.

What the interviewer actually asks

  1. "Tell me about yourself." Strong answer: about sixty seconds; present, past, then why you are here; ends at the role, not at your hobbies. See how to answer tell me about yourself.
  2. "Why do you want to join us?" Strong answer: one specific thing about the company (a product, a client, a training programme) connected to something you want.
  3. "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" Strong answer: one real weakness, what you are doing about it, and no "I am a perfectionist". See what are your weaknesses.
  4. "Where do you see yourself in five years?" Strong answer: growth inside the role or domain, consistent with what you said about higher studies.
  5. "Are you willing to relocate to any location and work in shifts?" Strong answer: a clear yes or a clear, honest limit, decided before the interview, not on the spot.
  6. "What is your expected CTC?" Strong answer: a range in LPA based on the role's known band, and a question about the fixed component. For campus drives, "the announced package is fine" is the honest answer. See CTC vs in-hand.
  7. "What is your notice period, and when can you join?" Strong answer: the exact number from your contract and what is realistic, including buyout or early release if applicable. See notice period.
  8. "Why did you leave your last job?" or "explain the gap." Strong answer: factual, no blame, and what you did during the gap.
  9. "Are you planning higher studies?" Strong answer: honest and consistent with your five-year answer; HR is measuring attrition risk.
  10. "Why should we hire you?" and "any questions for us?" Strong answer: two or three matches between the role's needs and your evidence, then two prepared questions about training or the team. See why should we hire you.

Every one of these gets a follow-up when the answer is vague. "I am flexible about location" gets "so Bhubaneswar is fine?"; "expected CTC as per company norms" gets "give me a number."

How a MockMate Practice session runs for the HR round

Practice runs in the browser.

  1. Attach your resume and the job description, and set your target role and seniority. The persona asks about the actual lines on your resume: the gap between semesters, the internship, the last employer.
  2. Set your language. You set your spoken language, and MockMate works in Hinglish and other configured languages, which matters because many Indian HR rounds are Hinglish in practice.
  3. Answer with follow-up pressure. The interviewer persona responds to what you said. A number for expected CTC gets "why that number?"; a yes to relocation gets a specific city.
  4. Ten minutes per free start, which is the length of a real fresher HR round and fits six to eight questions. Eligible accounts get three free Practice starts, tracked server-side.
  5. A report at the end. Details below.

Behavioural questions ("tell me about a time you failed") also appear in HR rounds; if those are your weak spot, run the behavioral mock interview as well.

What the report tells you

  • Question-level answers with coaching: for example, "the self-introduction listed hobbies and did not end at the role".
  • Response timing: how long you took to start each answer and how long you spoke. HR rounds punish both the thirty-second pause and the three-minute monologue.
  • Coaching evidence: the exact phrases the coaching is based on.
  • Recurring weaknesses: for example "hedges on commitment questions" across relocation, shifts and higher studies.
  • A recommended next practice: usually a second HR round after you have fixed the hedging, or a behavioural round if the STAR answers were thin.

Common mistakes in HR rounds

The HR round has its own failure modes, and most of them are visible in the Practice report as hedging or timing.

  1. The autobiography. "Tell me about yourself" answered with birthplace, family, schooling and hobbies. Sixty seconds, ending at the role.
  2. "As per company norms." The universal expected-CTC dodge. HR will ask for a number anyway; have a range in LPA ready and know the band for the role.
  3. Hedging on commitment questions. "I am mostly flexible about location" or "higher studies, maybe later" both read as attrition risk. Decide, then answer in one sentence.
  4. Contradicting yourself. The five-year plan says "team lead here"; the higher-studies answer says "MBA next year". HR compares the two. Make them consistent before the interview.
  5. Bad-mouthing the last employer. Even when the reason for leaving is real, the version you tell should be about what you want next, not what went wrong there.
  6. Guessing the notice period. Saying thirty days when the contract says ninety creates a problem at the offer stage and shows up in verification. Quote the contract.
  7. No questions. Two prepared questions about the training programme or the team are enough; "no, thank you" is a missed opportunity.

Every one of these is fixed by deciding the answer in advance and saying it out loud until it is one sentence long.

Honest limits

  • Practice is a browser product; Live is Windows-only. The mock HR interview works in any modern browser. MockMate's Live assistance companion runs only on Windows 10 and 11; there is no Mac, iOS or Android app.
  • Live is for permitted settings only. Use Live assistance only where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure; use Practice when permission is unclear. Campus HR rounds are Practice territory.
  • The persona does not know the company's salary bands. It will push on your number; it will not tell you the right one. Find the band from placement seniors or the pre-placement talk.
  • It cannot decide relocation for you. The report will show hedging; only you can remove it.
  • Three free starts, ten minutes each. After that, credits apply (as of September 2026: Starter ₹2,000 for 2 credits, Growth ₹5,000 for 5, Pro ₹10,000 for 12; one credit is about sixty minutes). See pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HR round really worth practising?

Yes. Most rejections at this stage come from four answers: expected CTC, relocation or shifts, higher studies, and an unclear self-introduction. Ten minutes of practice with follow-ups fixes all four before the real round.

Can I practise the HR round in Hinglish?

You set your spoken language, and MockMate works in Hinglish and other configured languages. Many Indian HR rounds drift between Hindi and English, so practising the same way is realistic.

Does the mock HR interview ask about salary and notice period?

Yes. With your resume and the job description attached and seniority set, the persona asks about current and expected CTC, notice period and joining date, and follows up if the answer is vague.

How many free HR mock interviews do I get?

Eligible accounts get three free Practice starts, each capped at ten minutes, tracked server-side. After that, credits apply, billed in thirty-minute blocks.

Can I use MockMate during the real HR round?

Only through the Windows Live companion and only where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure. If permission is unclear, use Practice beforehand and nothing during.
