Sales Mock Interview: Practise the Pitch, Objection Handling and Target Questions

Sales mock interview: the pitch, objection-handling, target and situational questions interviewers ask, how a MockMate round runs, and a 7-day plan.

Updated 7 min read

Sales interviews are the most practical interviews there are. The interviewer does not want to hear that you are a people person; they want to watch you sell something in the next three minutes, object to it, and see what you do. Candidates lose these rounds by talking about sales instead of doing it, by folding at the first "too expensive", and by giving vague answers to the questions about targets, travel and incentive pay that decide whether you will last.

This page lists what sales interviewers in India actually ask, from inside-sales and business-development freshers to field-sales and account-management roles, what a strong answer contains, how a MockMate Practice session runs a sales round, what the report shows, and a seven-day plan.

Who this is for

  • Freshers applying for business development, inside sales, pre-sales, tele-sales and management-trainee roles at ed-tech, fintech, SaaS, insurance, real estate, FMCG and pharma companies.
  • Field sales and channel sales candidates with one to five years who face a manager round about numbers, territory and churn.
  • Account managers and key-account candidates whose interview is a mix of relationship stories and negotiation role-play.
  • Anyone whose Hindi pitch is strong and whose English pitch falls apart; see also the English-speaking mock interview.

What the interviewer actually asks

  1. "Sell me this pen" or "sell me our product." Strong answer: ask two questions before pitching, connect one feature to the answer, name the price, ask for the sale.
  2. "Tell me about yourself." Strong answer: sixty seconds ending in a number or a result, not a personality description.
  3. "Why sales?" Strong answer: one real reason (money tied to effort, liking the customer conversation, a specific past win), not "I am good with people".
  4. "The customer says your price is too high. What do you say?" Strong answer: acknowledge, ask what they are comparing with, reframe around value or total cost, offer one option, do not discount first.
  5. "Walk me through your sales process from lead to close." Strong answer: prospecting, qualifying, discovery, demo or pitch, proposal, objection handling, close, follow-up; with the step where you lose most deals and why.
  6. "Tell me about a deal you lost." Strong answer: a STAR story where the loss was partly your fault and you changed something afterwards.
  7. "What were your targets and your achievement?" (experienced). Strong answer: exact numbers, monthly and annual, and how you got there; the interviewer will check consistency in the next round.
  8. "The customer says 'I need to think about it'. What next?" Strong answer: agree, ask what specifically they want to think about, isolate the real objection, set a follow-up date.
  9. "Role-play a cold call to a school principal" (or a clinic owner, a shop owner). Strong answer: a ten-second opener with a reason for calling, one question, permission to continue, and a clear next step.
  10. "Are you comfortable with field work, travel, six-day weeks and incentive-based pay?" Strong answer: a decided yes with awareness of what it involves, or an honest limit stated once.

Follow-ups are relentless in sales rounds. A pitch gets "I do not need it"; an objection answer gets "still too expensive"; a target number gets "show me the split by quarter".

How a MockMate Practice session runs a sales round

Practice runs in the browser.

  1. Attach your resume and the job description. A SaaS inside-sales JD produces discovery-call questions; a pharma field-sales JD produces doctor-visit role-plays. Set the role to sales or business development, your seniority, and the focus for this session: pitch and objections, process and numbers, or behavioral.
  2. Set your language. You set your spoken language, and MockMate works in Hinglish and other configured languages. If the real interview will be Hinglish, practise in Hinglish.
  3. Pitch and get objected to. The interviewer persona reacts to your answer: it objects on price, timing, trust or need, and keeps going. Follow-up pressure is the point.
  4. Ten minutes per free start, which fits a full pitch-objection-close sequence plus three or four other questions. Eligible accounts get three free Practice starts, tracked server-side.
  5. A report at the end. Details below.

What the report tells you

  • Question-level answers with coaching: "pitched features before asking a question", "discounted at the first objection", "target number given without a time period".
  • Response timing: how long before you started and how long you spoke. Sales answers that run past ninety seconds lose the customer; the report shows which ones did.
  • Coaching evidence: the phrases behind each note.
  • Recurring weaknesses: for example "closes without asking for the sale" across every role-play.
  • A recommended next practice: usually a second pitch round with a harder persona, or an HR round if the target and travel answers were the weak spot.

Common mistakes in sales rounds

Sales interviewers are watching for a short list of habits, and the Practice report picks up most of them in the pitch and objection questions.

  1. Pitching before asking. "Sell me this pen" answered with a feature list. Ask two questions first; the pen is then sold against an actual need.
  2. Discounting at the first objection. "Too expensive" answered with "I can give you ten percent off". The interviewer now knows the price is soft. Ask what they are comparing with and reframe around value.
  3. Talking about sales instead of doing it. "I am a people person" and "I am target-driven" are claims. A role-play, a number or a lost-deal story is evidence.
  4. Numbers without a period or a split. "I achieved 120 percent" of what, over what period, at what average deal size? Experienced candidates should be able to give the quarterly split from memory.
  5. Folding on "I need to think about it." Agreeing and ending the call. The strong version isolates what they need to think about and fixes a follow-up date.
  6. Hesitation on field work, travel and incentive pay. These questions decide whether you will last six months. A decided answer, given once, is what the interviewer wants to hear.

Freshers add one more: a sixty-second introduction with no result in it. End with a number from anywhere: an event you sold tickets for, a college fest sponsorship you closed, a part-time job.

Honest limits

  • Practice is a browser product; Live is Windows-only. The sales mock interview works in any modern browser. MockMate's Live assistance companion runs only on Windows 10 and 11; there is no Mac, iOS or Android app.
  • Live is for permitted settings only. Use Live assistance only where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure; use Practice when permission is unclear. Sales interviews rarely permit it.
  • The persona is a text-and-voice buyer, not a real one. It objects logically; real customers object emotionally and change the subject. Do one role-play with a person too.
  • It does not know the company's actual price list or incentive structure. Get those from the job description, the recruiter or a current employee.
  • Three free starts, ten minutes each. After that, credits apply (as of September 2026: Starter ₹2,000 for 2 credits, Growth ₹5,000 for 5, Pro ₹10,000 for 12; one credit is about sixty minutes). See pricing.

For a written question bank with sample answers, read sales interview questions for freshers. For the HR portion of the same interview, see the HR mock interview.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sales mock interview include role-play like 'sell me this pen'?

Yes. Set the role to sales or business development and the focus to pitch and objections, and the persona asks you to pitch, then objects on price, timing or trust, and pushes until you close or lose.

I am a fresher with no sales experience. What will it ask?

Set seniority to entry level and attach your resume. Questions stay on why sales, a pitch, handling one objection, comfort with targets and field work, and a college example of persuasion.

Can I practise in Hindi or Hinglish?

You set your spoken language, and MockMate works in Hinglish and other configured languages. Indian sales interviews often switch languages mid-pitch, so practising that way is realistic.

How long is one session?

A free Practice start runs up to ten minutes, enough for a pitch with objections plus three or four other questions. Eligible accounts get three free starts; after that, credits apply in thirty-minute blocks.

Can I use MockMate during my real sales interview?

Only through the Windows Live companion and only where the organisation, interviewer or applicable rules permit assistance and disclosure. For most sales interviews that is not the case, so use Practice beforehand.
